Types of Leathers:

Leather:  An animal pelt which has been tanned (chemical and mechanical process to eliminate perishables) and turned into a material.
Full-grain: The original, unaltered hide which has had the hair removed.  Shows the full grain of the animal. High quality.
Lambskin:  Leather from a young sheep or lamb.
Kidskin:  Leather from a young goat.
Calfskin:  Leather from young bovine (cow).
Cowhide:  Leather from a mature cow.
Pigskin:  Leather from pigs and hogs.
Shearling: (sometimes classify this as a fur).  This leather is made from sheep with the wool still attached.
Suede:  The flesh side (underside) of the leather is buffed to produce a nap.

Top grain:  This is a confusing term and it's usually used when the grain isn't real -- it's been "corrected" or sanded away and imitation grain has been stamped on the leather. "Full grain" or "Full top grain” indicates the original grain remains. Usually a cheaper leather.

Cordovan:  From the portion of the hide called the shell, which is produced with vegetable dyes and results in a very high-quality piece (usually shoes) that have an always-polished look.
Embossed:  A pattern that is applied using extreme pressure to leather. Often this produces the look of another type skin (crocodile, alligator, ostrich, etc.)
Split:  The hide is sliced into pieces to give uniform thickness and the inside (flesh side) is finished as suede.
Nubuck:  Leather that is buffed on the grain (hair) side of the grain to produce a velvety fine nap.
Patent:  Leather that has a high gloss finish produced by oils, varnish and resin.

 Information and Hints:
  • In general, the less the skin has been treated (dyed, corrected, etc.) the higher the quality of the piece.
  • Full grain leather is the highest quality, split leather is the cheapest.
  • Do not store leather in a plastic garment bag!   It cannot breathe.  Opt for a cloth cover instead.
  • If you absolutely must iron the item, set the iron on the lowest setting.  Don't use steam!  Place a heavy brown wrapping paper (or grocery bag) on the right side of the garment between the garment and the iron.  Quickly iron using a light hand. Avoid overheating!
  • Keep the item on a broad, sturdy hanger so it keeps its shape.
  • You can fix hems with a tiny amount of rubber cement, according to the Leather Apparel Association.
  • If the garment becomes wet, let it dry naturally. Avoid extreme heat or humidity that may damage the skin's natural oils.
  • Clean smooth leathers with a damp cloth.
  • Regularly brush suede’s and nubuck. Avoid cleaning chemicals.
  • Don't spray hairspray or perfume while wearing your leather items.
  • Seek out a professional leather care specialist when the garment becomes badly worn or soiled.
Being as there are many type of leather, we offer only some of the higher quality leathers.  As general knowledge we are adding information on all leather for those interested in learning about them.  We have attempted to keep this area simple.

 

Fabrics

By definition, fabrics is the artifact made by weaving or felting or knitting or crocheting natural or synthetic fibers, and let us leave it at that.
Today we have a very large selection of natural and synthetic fibers making up a large array of fabrics with different characteristics, feels, textures, durability’s, weather ability, and more that I can name.  The point is that there is lot to choose from and you must be cognizant of those items that you must know about your fabric.
What we need to understand is how to take care of it and if it needs special attention, the types and percentages of the fibers are noted.  We also include information that is needed for designers and manufacturers to understand how it can be applied, how much cut from which direction and how much one can get out of a width of a roll. 
That leaves us with the part that we must know as to its durability and how to clean it.  Durability is a function of double scrubs, where a brush is passed over the fabric so many times indicates it durability and a simple W, WS or S indicates the cleaning technique.
This is the very essence of fabrics that needs to be you focus on choosing your fabric.  We are trying to make your selection as easy as possible.

Fabric Cleaning Code:WS – Water Solvent Cleaner:

Spot Clean with a mild solvent, an upholstery shampoo or the foam from a mild detergent.  When using a solvent or dry cleaning product, follow instructions carefully and clean only in a well ventilated room.  Avoid any product that contains carbon tetrachloride or other toxic materials.

 

 S – Solvent Cleaner:

Spot clean, using a mild water-free solvent or dry cleaning product.  Clean only in a well ventilated room.  Avoid any product that contains carbon tetrachloride or other toxic materials.  

 

W – Water Based Cleaner:

Spot clean, using the foam only from a water based cleaning agent such as a mild detergent or non-solvent upholstery shampoo product.  Apply foam with a soft brush in a circular motion.  Vacuum when dry.
